PhD Student Position Available
Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS) University of Orebro, Sweden.
Research area
A major research project currently performed at AASS is the project “Ecology of Physically Embedded Intelligent Systems”. This project concerns physically embedded intelligent systems (PEIS) of varying degree of autonomy and intelligence, ranging from intelligent home appliances to autonomous cleaners and to mobile robots. These PEIS do not exist and operate in isolation, but they form an ecology of communicating and cooperating PEIS. The overall functionality of the full system emerges from the interaction between a number of simpler units.
For example, a coffee cup could be enriched with a micro-PEIS in order to simplify for a robot to find it and pick it up. Often, people will inhabit and actually be part of PEIS ecologies. As people typically are less predictable and less tolerant of disturbances, it is important to take them into account when the different PEIS plan their activities. At the same time, as people are much more intelligent than robots, they can also assist the PEIS ecology in its tasks.
Description of Work
The PhD student enrolled on this position will perform basic research on issues involved in the planning of activities in a PEIS ecology with people present. The student is expected to develop techniques that are both theoretically well founded, and experimentally validated on real robots and devices. This project will be performed at the Mobile Robotics Lab of AASS and is expected to lead to the attainment of a PhD degree. The student will be enrolled in the Swedish National Graduate School in Computer Science (CUGS). Prerequisites The candidate must have the equivalent of a Masters degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, and an excellent study curriculum. Furthermore a strong programming background as well as theoretical understanding is required. Previous experience with mobile robots is a plus. Fluent English is required.
Practical information
The University of Orebro is a young university enrolling more than 14,000 students and located in central Sweden. AASS is a multi-disciplinary research center that combines ideas from artificial intelligence, computer science, systems and control, and measurement technology to create autonomous systems like mobile robots. The PhD student will receive a fixed monthly salary adequate to the cost of living in Sweden, and will be included in the Swedish social security system.
Interested candidates should send an updated CV, together with a motivation letter, by e-mail to the contact person below by September 15, 2006. It is a good idea to give at least two reference persons, inclusive of email and telephone.
