The Centre for Mathematical Morphology, (http://cmm.ensmp.fr) part of the School of Mines, one of the most prestigious French school, is looking for a valuable PhD candidate.
The person will work in Fontainebleau, a name that is famous in the entire world, a magical name that evokes for some a forest, for others a chateau. a name which still shines from its royal history. It is a place where life is pleasant, a place where the expression "quality of life" takes on its full meaning (for a description, see http://www.uk.fontainebleau-tourisme.com/).
As a shuttle is operated everyday from and to Paris, an accommodation in "the city of lights" can also be considered, in order to make the most out of the cultural activities of the capital.
The goal of this PhD is to develop tools for urban environment modeling in the framework of a production platform of synthetic environments. A significant improvement of modeling tools is expected in terms of fidelity and precision.
The CMM has developed performing image processing tools. For example connected filters, that reduce the noise without blurring the interesting contours, and hierarchical segmentation approaches that, combined with graph theory, lead to very efficient algorithms. The image is converted into a graph containing the hierarchical information, which is a synthetic representation that simplifies image interpretation tasks.
In the framework of this Phd, the filtering and segmenting tools will be applied to urban images. They will be adapted in order to extract interesting structures (roadside, windows, buildings,)
Different image acquisition modalities will be considered (2D, 3D) and structures obtained from different modalities should be matched in order to obtain a realistic visualization. The hierarchical segmentation seems particularly adapted for this purpose, because different resolution levels may be considered for the matching.
Requirements:
- Good knowledge of image processing
- Good informatic skills (C and C++)
- English written and spoken
