Three PhD student research positions

The Department of Computer Science III, University of Bonn, is seeking
three graduate students in pursuing graduate studies and undertaking an
international research project in the area of distributed information
systems.
The title of the project is "Glowa-Volta". The project focuses on the
development of a distributed Decision Support System (DSS) for water
management. By simulating physical processes and evaluating huge amounts
of different policy interventions, the system should allow decision-makers
to select the most efficient solutions that are difficult or impossible
to find in a traditional way. To be able to do this, the DSS must
encompass a very large range of different distributed heterogeneous
resources such as scientific simulation tools, data sources and data
analisys systems.
In particular, the project is aimed to investigate the following
topics:
- architecture of middleware systems (SOA, Grid, P2P)
- distributed workflow management
- model integration and management
- sensor networks
The positions are open immediately until filled. They are funded by
German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for 3 years
as stipends, it is subject to satisfactory performance. The stpend
is roughly 12.000 Euro netto income per year.
We anticipate that the successful candidate will have a university
Diploma or Master in Computer Science or a related field, preferably
with a sound emphasis in databases and distributed information systems.
A solid background, willingness to work hard, and interest
in research are the main requirements. The candidate is expected to work
in close cooperation with our international partners. The working
language for communicating and for publications is English, a PhD
thesis might be written in English or German. German language skills
will be helpful, but are not necessarily required.
